Last Sunday (24th Sept.) was the first match of the WSF (Wirral Sea Fishing) Winter League held in conjuction with a BLAS (Blackpool and Layton Angling Society) match, held on the Wirral side of the River Mersey along Seacombe Promenade. We met up at 9am to sign in for the match which, considering it was the first of the season, had a good turnout of about 50 hopeful anglers. After making our way to our chosen mark and getting set [... read rest of post]

Sea Fishing Tackle Part 4 - Hooks

Hooks are one of (if not the) the most important parts of the end tackle used in sea fishing. They need to be small enough to be engulfed by the fish being sought but strong enough to land what could potentially be a huge fish. We mainly use two type of hooks in all the rigs we make – Aberdeen or wide-gape big mouth. Most of the hooks we buy online from veals.co.uk or Sakuma who have all the patterns [... read rest of post]

Mere Sands Wood Nature Reserve, Lancashire

I was determined to get out for a walk on Sunday even though the weather was a bit overcast so I paid a long over due visit to one of our local nature reserves, Mere Sands Wood, which is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside. This reserve has always been a favourite of mine, not only because it’s almost on our doorstep, but due the the huge variety of flora and fauna that can be [... read rest of post]

Formby Point - Search For Lug Then Hunt The Bass

After seeing on the internet some stunning Bass coming out at Formby Point and a huge 9lb 12oz fish being caught at Crosby during the previous week I arranged with a few friends to meet up at the car park at the end of Lifeboat Road at 6.00am – yes, that’s 6 in the morning! It was a struggle getting up in time to meet the guys but once on the beach, looking back towards the sand dunes, the dawn [... read rest of post]

West Lancashire Yatch Club 24 Hour Race

Yesterday I had a bit of free time on my hands and after finding out during last week that one of my cousins was sailing in the West Lancashire Yatch Club’s 40th 24 hour race I decided to go and have a look at the start of the event on Marine Lake, Southport. My cousin and her husband both sail for Ogston Sailing Club and each of them were doing a couple of 2 hour shifts throughout the race. Ogston [... read rest of post]

A Lunchtime Stroll in Queens Park, Bolton

As the weather was so good today I thought I’d take my camera out to take a few photographs in Queens Park, Bolton, which is where I can usually be found wandering around during my lunch hour looking at this amazing space right in the middle of town. I usually approach from the entrance nearest the centre of town which passes through an abundance of Buddleia, these in turn attract a variety of butterflies, one of which was this Comma [... read rest of post]

Sea Fishing Tackle Part 3 - End Tackle and Rigs

Continuing on with the series on sea fishing tackle this section will deal with what are termed rigs or end tackle, the business end containing the hook or hooks and different ways of attaching them and why. We make almost all of our own rigs so that we can customise them for specific venues / target species and, when you make you own end tackle you can be sure of the quality of the knots, hooks, swivels etc. For most [... read rest of post]
