It has been reported throughout the angling grapevine that what is believed to be the largest freshwater fish landed has been caught by British angler, Ian Welch while he was visiting Thailand helping in the tagging programme for these huge fish. Tagging the fish helps marine biologist track their movements and hence helps in the study of such wonderful creatures.

The giant freshwater stingray, weighing as much as 350kg (772lbs, or about 55 stone), was said to be the size of a garden shed and so cumbersome that Ian Welch had to enlist the aid of 12 other people to get it out of the water where it could be tagged safely and measurements taken before being released.

  1. What a creature! pressume you are holding it away from the sting, I tend to fish in france but Thailand looks appealing for more reasons.

  2. That monster would have been a handful to land.

That’s something to tell the grand kiddies!

  4. Have never seen a stingray like that out the water, is that freakish or what?

  5. Correct me if Im wrong but is that the same type of stingray that lethaly injured Steve Urwin? Must of taken some time to land, carefull of that tail though

  6. Webster – the one that ‘got’ Steve Irwin was a salt water stingray so no, it wasn’t one of these. It’s a big bugger isn’t it :)

  7. Did you all see that guy catch that massive stingray on TV? Kept in a tarp type on the bank swimming pool! Unbelievable, couldn’t take my eyes of TV! I’m a carp fishing enthusiast from UK, but am seriously thinking of a trip. Will be in touch early next year, wife is off to Spain with friends, so guess where I would like to go?
