May Bank Holiday, Sea Fishing on Anglesey

We’ve just spent the last week on Anglesey sea fishing and generally relaxing where, much to Wendy’s amusement, I was out-fished in both species and size. The week started well and after after chatting about possible locations for fly fishing and picking up bait from Menai Angling we spent the first day doing nothing. On the Sunday we made our way to a mark where Bass have been caught on lures and spend a couple of hours salt water fly [... read rest of post]

Amazing Film - Tapâm - a flyfishing journey

With the weather producing freezing rain and wind in truly biblical scales we haven’t done any sort of sea fishing or fly fishing these past few weeks and even venturing outside to do a little bit of gardening has had to timed between downpours so like any other angler what do I do when I can’t go fishing? Look up places I want to go fishing when the weather improves of course, and it was during such a search that [... read rest of post]

Salt Water Fly Fishing - 2012 Target - Mullet

This years target species for sea fishing is the Mullet, thin or thick lipped, we don’t care. We’ve tried and tried to get one of these and we’ve been so very close but this is the year , I can feel it. We’ve a fairly good ‘Mullety’ type river near us, the River Douglas which I’m convinced will produce Mullet as the tide floods into the small creeks but the water isn’t very clear so we’ll have to ‘cheat’ and [... read rest of post]

Curleys Trout Fishery Open Weekend

You’d think with the glorious weather we had last weekend that I’d have been fishing and you’d almost be right. Instead we went up to Gerrys of Morecambe to buy another Tubertini Boomerang and a couple of reels to match. More on this pairing another time. As that took longer than expected (tackle shops – they’re so hard to walk away from) there’s wasn’t much time for anything else on Saturday and Sunday, being another scorcher, was taken up doing [... read rest of post]

Testing our Willpower while Fly Fishing at Mere Beck

Sorry about the lack of post recently but what with the weather and various bits of reel life getting in the way we’ve not been able to get out and about as much as we’d like. The main reason recently though is that we’re both giving up smoking – I’ve smoked for over 20 years now and I’ve finally had enough, smoked my last 11 days ago and honestly… haven’t missed it as much as i thought I would. The [... read rest of post]

First Flyfishing Rainbow Trout of 2012

It was a very cold and frosty morning as we set off to Fylde Trout Fishery last Sunday. With more layers on than a polar explorer and flasks of hot coffee and soup we arrived about an hour after dawn to thankfully find the lake had not frozen solid although as soon as we got out of the car our fingers did good impersonations of icicles. After reading the reports from the previous few days we both elected to start [... read rest of post]

TF Gear Thermo-Tex Boots Test at Mere Beck

We went fly fishing over the weekend to our local Mere Beck, didn’t catch anything but we had a few follows and nips on the cat whisker lures Wendy made the previous week – yes – we’re finally making our own… I did get to try out some new boots that the nice people at fishing tackle suppliers, Fishtec sent me to test though and I must say first impressions are very good. The TF Gear Thermo-Tex Boots are constructed of [... read rest of post]

Fly Fishing Blank at Mere Beck

With not getting out recently I was looking forward to a spot of fly fishing at our local fishery, Mere Beck and woke to a slightly overcast morning with a hint of drizzle in the air, not great weather for most but fantastic for trying to temp a trout or two. I arrived around the same time as Gordon, the owner, and after the obligatory chat got down to the fishing. First fly to try was a cats whisker, a [... read rest of post]

August Weather Dampens the Fishing

The weather these past two weeks has been worthy of biblical descriptions. Wet? I think that’s slight understatement, we’ve not wanted to go outside let alone go fishing and on the days where it’s been almost tolerable the wind has been all over the place. We did manage to get out a couple of weeks ago for another attempt at getting a Smooth Hound at Cleveleys.  The weather was perfect – flat calm and a warm muggy evening but all [... read rest of post]

Testing the Airflo Forty Plus Line at Mere Beck

As the nice people at Fishtec sent us some of the new 2011 Airflo Forty Plus line to test we took a trip down to our local fly fishery, Mere Beck, last Sunday to see if we could tempt any trout to come and play. The weather was bizarre to say the least, red hot one minute, hammering it down the next, then hot enough to dry everything off again 10 minutes later. After reading the reports from the previous few [... read rest of post]
