This may just save a life – definitely something worth remembering.

Extreme angler and biologist Jeremy Wade returns for a brand new series uncovering the world’s largest, strangest and most dangerous fish in “River Monsters” on the Discovery Channel this month where he searches the globe to find out what is myth or monster. Traveling the globe and risking his life, Wade searches for these mysterious freshwater predators, on a mission to test the myths surrounding these almost supernatural creatures. I’ve caught a few “monsters” in my time but nothing quite [... read rest of post]

Saw this advert on the TV last night and it reminded me of Black Adder – undoubtedly one of the funniest TV series ever. Rik Mayall is brilliant as a Flash Diehard type character, and the Bombardier beer isn’t too shabby either :)

Strolling in the Sun Along the River Douglas

We’ve not been sea fishing for a while but we’re making up for it soon with a week on Anglesey so we’ve been getting our kit together and doing all sorts of home and garden maintenance type things before we go away. Even though I’m supposed to be getting stuff ready for going away I couldn’t resist a quick walk along our local River Douglas, not for any specific reason, just because it’s been a nice day. Nothing unusual to [... read rest of post]

The Birds, the Bees and the Bugs?

Spring is in the air and it’s time for all creatures great and small to start doing what the birds and the bees do best – yes – it’s time for some good old fashioned sex. Everywhere you look at this time of year you can see all types of fauna paired up and ready to make whoopie. During the past few days I’ve made the most of the weather and spent a fair amount of time wondering round Queens [... read rest of post]

Spring Arrives with Frogspawn at Queens Park

It looks like Winter has had his final fling as the winds die down a bit in Lancashire this week although Scotland is still getting a bit of Snow. There are definite signs of Spring as I found my first lot of Frogspawn for 2011 during my lunchtime walk through Queens Park in Bolton today – 9 days later than last year although not surprising considering the sub-zero Winter we’ve just had. I also spotted a Peregrine Falcon hunting Pigeons [... read rest of post]

February Update

Not been a lot happening in the sea fishing department recently, in fact I’ve not been any type of fishing for what seems like months although I know it hasn’t actually been that long. As I posted about a couple of weeks ago we’ve been decorating and there are only so many updates that can include that as a subject without bringing on a bout of yawns from anyone reading. The good news is it’s nearly all done and the [... read rest of post]

Signs of Spring in Queens Park Bolton

It seems to be that time of year when everything mother nature has to offer is gearing up for that final push into spring. Walking through the local parks and even just to the shops you can almost feel the plants starting to reach up to the sun and the amount of bird activity has dramatically increased these past two weeks with birds of sizes great and small flying around looking for suitable nest sites. The trees in Queens Park [... read rest of post]

fishfight.net - Help Stop Wasteful Disgards

Around half of all fish caught in UK waters are thrown back overboard dead! This is insane no matter how you look at it. I’m not saying the fishing methods are right or wrong but if the current common fisheries policy forces our fishing fleet to throw back perfectly good fish because they are the ‘wrong type’ something has got to change. Hugh Fearnley-Whittstal, of River Cottage fame, has taken up the gauntlet to bring this stupidity to light and [... read rest of post]

Save Our Seas - The Marine Conservation Society

The Marine Conservation Society, MCS, is the voice for everyone who loves the sea, working to secure a future for our living seas, and to save our threatened sea life before it is lost forever. Almost nowhere in UK seas is marine wildlife safe from harm and the need to establish marine protected areas where wildlife can recover and flourish is vital. Beach litter has doubled over the last decade. 88% of Europe’s fish stocks are overfished or depleted. Once [... read rest of post]
