A New Angle to Try, Fly Fishing at Mere Beck

We’ve always wanted to have a go at Fly Fishing but it’s always seemed out of reach for some reason, maybe because up here in Lancashire you always hear tell of the best streams being ‘down south’ or the famous rivers being in Scotland but there’s a growing community out there of people who are applying this method of angling to our local salt water species of which one of the main sources of information is the website of UK [... read rest of post]

Fishing in Thailand - Monster Stingray Landed

It has been reported throughout the angling grapevine that what is believed to be the largest freshwater fish landed has been caught by British angler, Ian Welch while he was visiting Thailand helping in the tagging programme for these huge fish. Tagging the fish helps marine biologist track their movements and hence helps in the study of such wonderful creatures. The giant freshwater stingray, weighing as much as 350kg (772lbs, or about 55 stone), was said to be the size [... read rest of post]

Thankyou RNLI

After last weekends drama on the beach and the timely intervention by the emergency services a few of us anglers (and some not so local) got together with Bill (our friend that was rescued last week) and visited the RNLI station in Blackpool. It was great to see the guys who so often put their lives on the line to save many, many lives and we all had a good chat and a look round the station – they’d been [... read rest of post]

ICE – In Case Of Emergency

I was sent the following information in an email today – completely unrelated to the weekends drama but very timely. ICE – In Case Of Emergency. Most of us carry a mobile phone with names and numbers stored in its memory. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn’t know who to call. The following advice was provided by the Lancashire Fire and Rescue [... read rest of post]

No Sea Fishing or Walking - Decorating Takes Precedence

After two weeks of living in the spare room we finished decorating at the back end of last week so we’ve moved back in too our bedroom – it’s weird but it felt like I was on holiday it, new colours, new bedding, new cupboards, in fact almost new everything except same old me of course. I almost managed to get out today, not fishing exactly, but the BLAS (Blackpool and LAyton Angling Society) guys had a sea fishing match [... read rest of post]

Llandudno - Odd Year Part 2

So what else did we do last year? Not a lot of sea fishing or fel walking that’s for sure. We did manage to suprise my father though which is a task in itself. For the past few years he has been entering the Three Castles Welsh Classic Trial with a friend, Bill. He works as the navigator and Bill, the proud owner of the car – a beautiful bright red Triumph TR5, is the driver. This year (2008) we [... read rest of post]

14 Damp Days in Devon

Who’d take a holiday in Britain in this weather? We would that’s who. We’ve just returned from a very relaxing, if not a little damp, 2 weeks in South Devon where we stayed at a working farm near a small village called Loddiswell. Our intention was to do some sea fishing and walking around the area but to say the weather was against us would be to understate the amount of rain drastically. I’ll go into the fishing in a [... read rest of post]

The Gardeners Friend

A lot of the time we have to go out of our way to see some of the amazing things mother nature has to show us in the country, but sometimes nature comes to see us. We sere sitting outside enjoying a brief spell of sun before darkness fell and more rain came down when we heard a shuffling at the bottom of the garden, thinking nothing of it and assuming it was one of the many cats from the [... read rest of post]

Spring is Here And Out Comes The Sun

What a huge difference to the world the sun makes. I’ve spent all my lunch hours for the past 2 weeks walking through Queenspark, Bolton and the difference in the flora and fauna is truly astonishing. At the start of last week there were hardly any flowers except the Daffodils but this week the woods are full of Bluebells and Wild Garlic in every direction you look and whenever you stray off the path the smell of the Garlic instantly [... read rest of post]

It seems to be that time of year when everyone is starting to blog for the first time or updating old websites, would you believe it’s been a year since I started this one? So here are a few blogs that have recently gone ‘live’ that are vaguely related to my life… First up a new blog, Fresh New Creative, from Kathryn at work. Being a blog about all things ‘cool’ in her eyes – music, art or gadgets – [... read rest of post]
