Learning to Fly (fish) at Mere Beck

With the weather being so fantastic it was time for Wendy’s birthday present – a bit early but what can you do? It’s not every girl that wants fly fishing lessons for her birthday and who was I to argue, so after a bit of last minute day off juggling with work we went to Mere Beck Fly Fishery which is just up the road from where we live for a bit of tuition and an afternoon of fly fishing. No New Windows but Great Weather

Although I’d planned to have a go at sea fishing somewhere this weekend my plans were thrown out almost as soon as I’d made them. We were due to have some windows replaced but the bloke was late and when he got here they were the wrong size so that didn’t get done. While he was here, supposedly fitting windows I was going to go and buy a new bait pump (mine is trashed) but as it would take me [... read rest of post]

Not much to report this week as work has been a bit busy and I’ve had a bit of a cold – you know – the type of cold that turns your face into a ball of slime. Not nice. The good thing is, after hearing the Swifts screeching last night, I saw a couple on the way to work this morning. It seems the birds know summer is on the way even if the weather doesn’t – it’s hammered [... read rest of post]

A New Angle to Try, Fly Fishing at Mere Beck

We’ve always wanted to have a go at Fly Fishing but it’s always seemed out of reach for some reason, maybe because up here in Lancashire you always hear tell of the best streams being ‘down south’ or the famous rivers being in Scotland but there’s a growing community out there of people who are applying this method of angling to our local salt water species of which one of the main sources of information is the website of UK [... read rest of post]

Fishing in Thailand - Monster Stingray Landed

It has been reported throughout the angling grapevine that what is believed to be the largest freshwater fish landed has been caught by British angler, Ian Welch while he was visiting Thailand helping in the tagging programme for these huge fish. Tagging the fish helps marine biologist track their movements and hence helps in the study of such wonderful creatures. The giant freshwater stingray, weighing as much as 350kg (772lbs, or about 55 stone), was said to be the size [... read rest of post]

Thankyou RNLI

After last weekends drama on the beach and the timely intervention by the emergency services a few of us anglers (and some not so local) got together with Bill (our friend that was rescued last week) and visited the RNLI station in Blackpool. It was great to see the guys who so often put their lives on the line to save many, many lives and we all had a good chat and a look round the station – they’d been [... read rest of post]

ICE – In Case Of Emergency

I was sent the following information in an email today – completely unrelated to the weekends drama but very timely. ICE – In Case Of Emergency. Most of us carry a mobile phone with names and numbers stored in its memory. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn’t know who to call. The following advice was provided by the Lancashire Fire and Rescue [... read rest of post]

No Sea Fishing or Walking - Decorating Takes Precedence

After two weeks of living in the spare room we finished decorating at the back end of last week so we’ve moved back in too our bedroom – it’s weird but it felt like I was on holiday it, new colours, new bedding, new cupboards, in fact almost new everything except same old me of course. I almost managed to get out today, not fishing exactly, but the BLAS (Blackpool and LAyton Angling Society) guys had a sea fishing match [... read rest of post]

Llandudno - Odd Year Part 2

So what else did we do last year? Not a lot of sea fishing or fel walking that’s for sure. We did manage to suprise my father though which is a task in itself. For the past few years he has been entering the Three Castles Welsh Classic Trial with a friend, Bill. He works as the navigator and Bill, the proud owner of the car – a beautiful bright red Triumph TR5, is the driver. This year (2008) we [... read rest of post]

14 Damp Days in Devon

Who’d take a holiday in Britain in this weather? We would that’s who. We’ve just returned from a very relaxing, if not a little damp, 2 weeks in South Devon where we stayed at a working farm near a small village called Loddiswell. Our intention was to do some sea fishing and walking around the area but to say the weather was against us would be to understate the amount of rain drastically. I’ll go into the fishing in a [... read rest of post]
