Testing our Willpower while Fly Fishing at Mere Beck

Sorry about the lack of post recently but what with the weather and various bits of reel life getting in the way we’ve not been able to get out and about as much as we’d like. The main reason recently though is that we’re both giving up smoking – I’ve smoked for over 20 years now and I’ve finally had enough, smoked my last 11 days ago and honestly… haven’t missed it as much as i thought I would. The [... read rest of post]

TF Gear Thermo-Tex Boots Test at Mere Beck

We went fly fishing over the weekend to our local Mere Beck, didn’t catch anything but we had a few follows and nips on the cat whisker lures Wendy made the previous week – yes – we’re finally making our own… I did get to try out some new boots that the nice people at fishing tackle suppliers, Fishtec sent me to test though and I must say first impressions are very good. The TF Gear Thermo-Tex Boots are constructed of [... read rest of post]

Fly Fishing Blank at Mere Beck

With not getting out recently I was looking forward to a spot of fly fishing at our local fishery, Mere Beck and woke to a slightly overcast morning with a hint of drizzle in the air, not great weather for most but fantastic for trying to temp a trout or two. I arrived around the same time as Gordon, the owner, and after the obligatory chat got down to the fishing. First fly to try was a cats whisker, a [... read rest of post]

Testing the Airflo Forty Plus Line at Mere Beck

As the nice people at Fishtec sent us some of the new 2011 Airflo Forty Plus line to test we took a trip down to our local fly fishery, Mere Beck, last Sunday to see if we could tempt any trout to come and play. The weather was bizarre to say the least, red hot one minute, hammering it down the next, then hot enough to dry everything off again 10 minutes later. After reading the reports from the previous few [... read rest of post]

First Dry Fly Fishing Rainbow Trout at Mere Beck

Last weekend the wind and rain finally died enough for us to get out fishing, we’d no bait for any of the summer sea fishing species so we went up to Mere Beck for a few hours on Monday evening for a touch of fly fishing. With the sun still fairly high when we arrived at 6pm we started at the rear lake with nymphs, fished deeply on a slow retrieve. I had one take which I missed but after [... read rest of post]

Two Rainbow Trout Fly Fishing at Mere Beck

With the fantastic weather last weekend after all the usual garden centre faffing about we visited our local fly fishery, Mere Beck, to see if we could finally break our duck. It’s amazing how much better you feel when the weather is nice and it was T-shirt time as we donned our new vests, laden with flies and line and meandered our way to the back of the fishery – the plan being to gradually move back towards the lodge [... read rest of post]

Fly Casting Refresher Plus a Bit of Fishing

Our pre-Christmas fly fishing / casting tuition was cancelled due to the weather so Mike Roden re-scheduled it for last weekend. Four brave souls met up in some fairly nasty weather with Mike at Curley’s Fly Fishery nr. Bolton and after a quick natter moved over the road to the park as the lakes were still frozen. As we suspected we’d picked up a few bad habits since our last lessons with Mike but after a couple of hours we’d [... read rest of post]

A Beautiful Evening Fly Fishing at Mere Beck

After my recent poor form in the sea fishing department we had an evening session fly fishing at Mere Beck Fly Fishery, near Preston, a few nights ago. The reports had been pretty poor and apparently trout don’t like bright sunny conditions so the prospects of a fish didn’t look good but we packed some sandwiches and drove the whole 10 minutes (I know!!!) up the road to have a go anyway. Chatting to Gordon, the Owner / Manager, who [... read rest of post]

Practicing for the Sea, Fly Fishing at Mere Beck

Do I look like a happy chap in the above photo? I think so!!!! After mucking about last year and getting a bit of a taste for Fly Fishing we’re going to get a little more serious about it this year (ie, go more than twice a year) for both fresh and salt water species. As I was a bit rusty to say the least and Wendy a bit less so we went to Mere Beck Fly Fishery which is [... read rest of post]

Blooming Hot Orchids in Lancashire

The weather here in Lancashire has been truly fantastic this last week and even though we’ve had a few very heavy showers we’ve managed to get out a couple of times. One mini walk round Mere Sands Wood nature reserve where the Marsh Orchids were flowering in the ‘meadow walk’, not much bird activity as I guess it’s too hot for them. The other trip was last Saturday evening where we went to Mere Beck to have a quick practice [... read rest of post]
