Testing our Willpower while Fly Fishing at Mere Beck

Sorry about the lack of post recently but what with the weather and various bits of reel life getting in the way we’ve not been able to get out and about as much as we’d like. The main reason recently though is that we’re both giving up smoking – I’ve smoked for over 20 years now and I’ve finally had enough, smoked my last 11 days ago and honestly… haven’t missed it as much as i thought I would. The [... read rest of post]

First Flyfishing Rainbow Trout of 2012

It was a very cold and frosty morning as we set off to Fylde Trout Fishery last Sunday. With more layers on than a polar explorer and flasks of hot coffee and soup we arrived about an hour after dawn to thankfully find the lake had not frozen solid although as soon as we got out of the car our fingers did good impersonations of icicles. After reading the reports from the previous few days we both elected to start [... read rest of post]

Fly Fishing Blank at Mere Beck

With not getting out recently I was looking forward to a spot of fly fishing at our local fishery, Mere Beck and woke to a slightly overcast morning with a hint of drizzle in the air, not great weather for most but fantastic for trying to temp a trout or two. I arrived around the same time as Gordon, the owner, and after the obligatory chat got down to the fishing. First fly to try was a cats whisker, a [... read rest of post]

Testing the Airflo Forty Plus Line at Mere Beck

As the nice people at Fishtec sent us some of the new 2011 Airflo Forty Plus line to test we took a trip down to our local fly fishery, Mere Beck, last Sunday to see if we could tempt any trout to come and play. The weather was bizarre to say the least, red hot one minute, hammering it down the next, then hot enough to dry everything off again 10 minutes later. After reading the reports from the previous few [... read rest of post]

First Dry Fly Fishing Rainbow Trout at Mere Beck

Last weekend the wind and rain finally died enough for us to get out fishing, we’d no bait for any of the summer sea fishing species so we went up to Mere Beck for a few hours on Monday evening for a touch of fly fishing. With the sun still fairly high when we arrived at 6pm we started at the rear lake with nymphs, fished deeply on a slow retrieve. I had one take which I missed but after [... read rest of post]

Two Rainbow Trout Fly Fishing at Mere Beck

With the fantastic weather last weekend after all the usual garden centre faffing about we visited our local fly fishery, Mere Beck, to see if we could finally break our duck. It’s amazing how much better you feel when the weather is nice and it was T-shirt time as we donned our new vests, laden with flies and line and meandered our way to the back of the fishery – the plan being to gradually move back towards the lodge [... read rest of post]

Another Fylde Fishery Rainbow Trout for Wendy

As the sea fishing has been so grim over the past few weeks and giving Dave a ring at Fylde Trout Fishery to make sure the lake was free of ice we spent a very pleasant, if cold, Sunday morning doing our best to tempt Rainbow Trout out of the depths of the very cold water. Our initial plan was me to fish an intermediate line with lures to search the depths while Wendy fished a floating line, also with [... read rest of post]

First Rainbow Trout from the Fylde

What a truly brilliant weekend! I’ll start at the end just to be different as we’re still buzzing about Wendy catching our first fly caught Rainbow Trout. We arrived at Fylde Trout Fishery around lunch time and had a chat with a few guys who were just leaving, the news wasn’t good “it’s a bit tough today” were the sorts of comments being made. Looking at the previous days report it seemed like the trout weren’t being quite as crazy as [... read rest of post]
